Nóiníní Beaga was founded in 2011 by Biorra Le Gaeilge, a voluntary group who came together with the idea of promoting the Irish language in Birr, Co. Offaly. Their vision was to start a naíonra (preschool) and campaí samhraidh (summer camps) and hopefully build on the interest by opening a Gaelscoil (primary school) in the town.

In September 2011, a group of 8 páistí started in Nóiníní Beaga and today, over 200 children have passed through it's doors. Originally a small shop unit on Green Street, Birr, Nóiníní Beaga now occupies a 100 square metre section of a commercial building in Syngefield, Birr. The naíonra comprises 2 large classrooms and a large outdoor space to the rear. Nóiníní Beaga currently has 44 children enrolled and is always taking enquiries and enrolments for future years.

Following on from the success and popularity of Irish language education at Nóiníní Beaga, Birr's Gaelscoil "Gaelscoil na Laochra' opened it's doors in September 2015, giving the children of Birr and opportunity to continue their learning "trí Ghaeilge" up to rang a sé (6th class).
